The Outbreak - Half-life 2 - Level Design

It will showcase design intention, implementation & problem solving.
The combine have taken control of the main civilian stronghold, turning it into an in-house testing facility.
It's Freeman's job to infiltrate the area & activate the communication tower.
Sole creator of the outbreak.
Role: designer
Duration: 6 weeks (mainly weekends)
Week 1 - Ideation, Planning, & Limitations
Week 2 - Learning the engine & started blocking out the start area
Week 3 & 4 - Blockout, Scripting & Play testing
Week 5 - Adding further narrative elements to the level, adding audio cues for specific events, light pass on the level, some blockout iterations, scripting polish, & Play testing
Week 6 - Play testing, bug fixing, polish & published the level
Goals
- Create a single player, linear experience within an existing IP.
- Ensure the level is fully functional & can be completed
- Set up multiple different, fun scripted scenarios.
- Knowledge of another game engine.
- Guiding the player through the level fluidly & naturally.
- Providing players with clear obstacles and tools to overcome them.
- Tutorialisation segments in safe environments.
